Ships Built at Pier 70 Before World War II

In the pre-World War II era, from 1885 to 1941, the shipyard at what is now Pier 70 produced some of its most illustrious ships. During the Union Iron Works period (1885-1905), it built several navy ships that became internationally famous during the Spanish-American war, such as Admiral Dewey's flagship the Olympia, and the battleship Oregon. It also produced some of the first effective submarines in the U.S. Navy. After 1905, the shipyard operated as part of Bethlehem Steel, and produced both warships and merchant ships. Its output during World War I was important, and included a large number of destroyers. On one day, July 4, 1918, eight destroyers were launched at the San Francisco yard!
